Liturgies for Advent - John the Baptist
Depending upon the tradition to which you belong, the shape of
Advent services might follow a similar route year by year or,
with liturgical series such as that used by the Anglican Church,
follow a three year
cycle of readings.
The themes most often used for the four weeks of Advent are Hope,
Peace, Joy and Love; or God’s people, the Old Testament
Prophets, John the Baptist and Mary. However, the choice of themes
is not limited to the usual or comfortable, and with a little
forward planning there are many ways in which the approach to
Christmas can be tackled imaginatively, and bring out different
truths about God's amazing love and Grace.

more contemporary (or unusual!) and a full list of current liturgies

Short liturgies often form part of the beginning of a service
whilst one of the Advent candles are lit, and the following liturgy
is written with that end in mind, although could be used at any
point within a time of worship
The Advent liturgy below is on the theme of John the baptist.
John the Baptist
(Responses are in bold type)
‘And you, my child, will be called a prophet
of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare
the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins...’ Luke 1: 76 - 7
In the lonely places
The wilderness
Where we stand forlorn
Windswept and alone
Your voice calls out
Prepare a way for the Lord
In the dark places
The shadows
Where we hide our fears
Embrace our tears
Your voice calls out
Prepare a way for the Lord
‘…because of the tender mercy of our God, by which
the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living
in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into
the path of peace." Luke 1: 78 – 9
As the rising sun comes to us each dawn
Shine upon those who live in darkness
That all might know the joy of our salvation
The forgiveness of sins
And your great mercy
For the desert places in which we walk
The streets we roam
The paths we cross
Guide our feet
Take us to places
Where you would go
Give us words that you would use
That in this Advent season
Of promise and preparation
We might point the way with John the Baptist
To the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
