Prayers of Comfort and Healing

prayers for healing and comfort

Below you will find a selection of Scripture passages and accompanying prayers which I have written for them. There is a general theme of comfort, reassurance and healing running through both.

This resource is a continuing work in progress.

Luke 6:17-19
‘He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.’ (NIV)

Like bees to nectar
you draw us to yourself,
the sweetness of your love
bringing healing,
comfort and peace;
the power of your love
transforming hearts,
souls and lives.
Spirit of love and power,
touch our lives
with sweetness
and grace,
touch our hearts
with healing
and peace.

Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (NIV)

In times of weakness
and hour of need,
yours is the strength
by which we carry on,
the shoulder
we rest our head upon.
When our load is heavy
and too much to bear,
yours are the arms
stretched out to help us
the grace
that we depend on.
In times of weakness
and hour of need,
your voice is heard,
‘Come… find rest.’

1 Corinthians 10:12-13
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. (NIV)

This world tempts us
with bright lights
city streets,
tempting sights
and sounds.

This world tempts us
with objects
of desire,
raises us up
knocks us down.

This world tempts us
to believe
its lies,
challenges us
to live them.

This world tempts us
to reject
our God,
accuses us
and hates us.

This world tempts us
to disbelieve
the truth
that nothing can
defeat us.

Mark 6:56
And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed. (NIV)

God of healing
God of wholeness
we bring our brokenness
our sinfulness
our fears
and despair
and lay them at your feet.

God of healing
God of wholeness
we reach out
hearts and hands
minds and souls
to feel your touch
and know the peace
that only you can bring.

God of healing
God of wholeness
this precious moment
in your presence
and power
grant us faith
and confidence
that here
broken lives
are made whole.

Psalm 51:10-12
‘Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.’ (NIV)

In my heart I have known
such intimacy with you Lord,
known you are always within my reach.
I have heard your glorious whisper
breaking through the clamour
of the world in which I move,
spent time in silent worship
in places of tranquillity and peace.
But there are moments
when deep in my soul
you seem so far away,
when the moments of my day
are consumed by my own self-interest
ambition and pride,
when my heart judges
and declares my guilt.
Draw me close again,
restore the love I first knew
that I might worship you
in spirit and truth
not only with my lips
but with each moment of my day.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (NIV)

Lord, I am assailed
from within and without;
self-doubt and loathing,
disrespect and insult.
The world closes in,
swamps and consumes me.
I am sinking yet will not drown.
For you endured all this
and much more,
beaten, hated
scourged and whipped,
humiliated and killed
yet rising victorious
to demonstrate the paradox
of strength through weakness,
love conquering all.
I am weak
but through the grace of Christ
I am strong
and together
we shall overcome.

Romans 5:3-5
‘… we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.’ (NIV)

We are born in hope,
Raised in hope,
Nurtured in hope,
Loved in hope,
Comforted in hope,
Suffer in hope,
Endure in hope,
Overcome in hope.
Hope in the One
who has endured all things
that we might know freedom,
Hope in the One
who has given us his Spirit
that we might have power,
Hope in the One
who has loved us beyond death
that we might have life,
Hope in the One
who prepares a place for us
that we might share eternity with him.
For hope that endures, we thank you Lord.

Psalm 18:1-3
I love you, LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies. (NIV)

I call to you, Lord
at the dawn of this new day,
place into your hands
family and friends,
work to be done,
decisions I shall make,
obstacles I encounter,
strangers who pass my way,
the service I shall offer.

I call to you, Lord
at the dawn of this new day,
my rock and my fortress,
my strength and deliverer,
for all I am is yours,
each moment of this day
gifted to me by grace,
and offered in your name,
my offering of praise.

1 John 5:14-15
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. (NIV)

Who are we?
Imperfect
reaching for Perfection
Created
reaching for Creator
Mortal
reaching for Immortal.
Who are we
who can ask of God
that which is on our hearts
and know
that he will hear our prayer?
We are those
loved beyond loving,
focus of our Creator’s heart.
We are children
of a heavenly Father,
who takes
the burdens of our hearts
and substitutes
a peace that brings release,
who knows our needs
before we ask
yet loves to hear our voice.

Who are we?
Blessed and grateful
to a God who loves each one of us
as if there were but one to love.
Halleluia!

Romans 8:31-39
What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

We want for nothing
if we journey with our God,
his footsteps leading,
his hand to steady
if we should fall.

We want for nothing
if we listen to our God,
his gentle whisper
breaking through
the storms of life.

We want for nothing
if we rely upon our God,
his grace enough
to bring healing
into broken lives.

We want for nothing
in the service of our God,
in blessing others
through our lives
so we are blessed.

We want for nothing
in the worship of our God,
his Holy Spirit
the comforter
will satisfy our souls.

Romans 5:1-5
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

I enter this day with joy
knowing you are with me
every step of the way,
knowing there is a purpose
to each breath that I take,
knowing there is a hope
toward which I walk.

I enter this day with faith
knowing you are the strength
which I depend on,
knowing you are the love
that is all embracing,
knowing it is your peace
which calms my soul.

I enter this day with praise
knowing that I worship
with service as with voice,
hoping that my words
might reveal your truth,
hoping that your grace
might touch another heart.

Philippians 4:4-7
'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.'

Sometimes words are not enough
to express the language of our hearts,
sometimes minds are filled
with prayers without expression.

Sometimes there are not enough
spare moments in each day,
sometimes regret is all
we have as our confession.

Sometimes faith is not enough
but in the presence of your peace,
sometimes prayer can be
a quiet conversation.

Sometimes words are not enough
to express the anguish on our hearts,
sometimes prayers are answered
that remain unspoken.

Ecclesiastes3:1-4
'To every thing there is a season, a time to every purpose under the heaven: a time to be born, a time to die, a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal, a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.'

The joy you felt today
is the smile you share tomorrow.
A time for all things,
that all might be blessed.
The grief you knew yesterday
may be the comfort you share today.
A time for all things,
that all might be blessed.
The hurt you felt today
is the forgiveness you share tomorrow.
A time for all things,
that all might be blessed.
The seed you sowed yesterday
may be the fruit you harvest today.
A time for all things,
that all might be blessed.
in springtime
and winter,
in dancing
and mourning,
healing
and death.

2Thessalonians 2:16+17
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting comfort and hope which we don't deserve, comfort your hearts with all comfort, and help you in every good thing you say and do.

May I arise this morning
feeling your warmth
embracing me,
conscious of your love
forgiving me,
knowing your peace
within me,
feeling your Spirit
strengthen me,
hearing your whisper
encouraging me.
In all I do
and in all I say
may my life
this day
and all days
reflect
the beauty of my Lord.
